1-to-1 Chromebook Initiative

The schools of the Chatfield area are committed to preparing students to be college and career ready - communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills are essential to thrive in the 21st century. That is why the area elementary and middle schools are joining the Chatfield Chromebook initiative, launched this year by Chatfield Senior High, to bring a 1-to-1 Chromebook learning environment to students grades 2-12. Having ongoing access to technology will allow our students to consistently practice and apply those 21st-century skills, and prepare them for a variety of post-secondary options.

The initiative will begin at different grades at each school. For the 2018-19 school year, all students entering 6th grade at Deer Creek and Falcon Bluffs will be required to purchase a Chromebook from the school to use for educational purposes at school and at home.

For 7th and 8th graders next year, all students will need a device to use daily at school. Students will not be required to purchase Chromebooks through the initiative, but we strongly recommend that they do, if they do not already have a device to bring to school daily.

The Chromebooks purchased by Deer Creek students will be able to be used in future years at Chatfield, so there would be no need to purchase another one entering 9th grade. As the classroom expands through the use of technology for communication, resources, online texts, and more, a compatible computing device at school is becoming an important learning tool.

A Chromebook is an inexpensive laptop with a long battery life that only requires simple maintenance and runs the Google Chrome operating system. They are ideal for use with the Jeffco Google domain, and work seamlessly with Google Classroom, the online portal used in all classes at Deer Creek. Files are stored in the cloud so that students can access them anywhere from any device. We can provide consistent access, reliable connectivity, and valuable equity for all of our students with these devices.

The Chromebooks will be Lenovo model 100e:

Basic clamshell (laptop) design with front facing camera. Rugged design with bumpers on the frame, reinforced 180 degree hinges, and a water resistant keyboard.

Although many schools have implemented a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program for several years, there are many advantages to moving to a 1-to-1 format:

  1. All students will have access to a Chromebook in every class, not just some students or some classes.
  2. Chromebooks provide a consistent device for students and staff, eliminating the problems of multiple devices, platforms and applications across the classroom and school.
  3. The Chromebooks will be able to access the faster Internal network in each building, rather than the slower Guest or Instructional networks.
  4. Educational apps can be pushed out to all student devices by Jeffco, keeping devices up to date and maintaining a high level of security.
  5. Students can take online assessments, such as CMAS and MAP, on their device, which they are not able to do with BYOD technology.
  6. Students will keep the device over school breaks and summers, making learning a year-round activity.
  7. Students can personalize their device cover to make their Chromebook more easily identifiable.
  8. Chromebooks will have a Jeffco warranty and support, as well as functioning within the Jeffco internet filter.
  9. The Chromebooks will follow the students as they change schools in Jeffco, eliminating the need to purchase a new device when a student matriculates from elementary to middle or middle to high school.
  10. If a student graduates or moves to a school that is not a part of the Chromebook initiative, they may take the device with them.

7th and 8th Graders

In March, future 7th and 8th grade families were given the option to pre-order a Chromebook for the 2018-19 school year through the school, paid for with a $200 use-to-own fee added to their school fees.  Prices for Chromebooks have increased, so the use-to-own fee will increase to $220 in August for those that did not pre-order. The Chromebooks will be distributed to students during the first weeks of school next year.  Students who already have devices (BYOD) are not required to buy Chromebooks through the initiative.

6th Graders

For incoming 6th graders, to help offset the use-to-own fee, we will be lowering or eliminating most 6th grade fees and supplies. School-owned devices are available for students who qualify for free/reduced meals through the National School Lunch Program.

For incoming 6th graders who do not already have a Jeffco Chromebook Initiative device, the fee for a Chromebook ($200) and the Outdoor Lab fee ($350) add up to a big expense. Through the OELS Foundation, however, you can begin saving money now for Outdoor Lab by participating in the Outdoor Lab Foundation’s Lab Cards Program. You can purchase a King Soopers reloadable grocery card to be loaded with money and used at the stores and gas stations when making purchases. The stores will donate 4.5% of your purchases to an account set up for your student’s Outdoor Lab fee. If you haven’t joined the program, now is the perfect time!  Most families can cover the entire cost of Outdoor Lab by simply using the Lab Card for their regular grocery and gas purchases.
